The Missouri State Seal
The Missouri state seal was designed by Judge Robert William Wells It was approved on January 11, 1822. The seal is made up of many symbols. Each symbol has a special meaning. The two bears show courage and strength. The 24 stars show that Missouri was the 24th state created. The helmet stands for power. The seal is used on important government papers. It is kept in the Secretary of State's Office.
Missouri State Capital
On February 5, 1911, lightning struck the dome of the Missouri State Capitol, igniting a blaze which destroyed the building. As a result, the State Capitol Commission Board was established to coordinate and supervise the construction of a new capitol, the third capitol located in Jefferson City and the sixth in the state. The new Capitol was constructed between 1913 and 1917 at a cost of roughly $4.21 million.
